Overview

Importing your LinkedIn connections into Affinity gives your team visibility into your collective professional network, making it easy to identify warm introduction paths to target companies and people without leaving your CRM. What it does: Uploads your LinkedIn connections from a CSV file, adding them to Affinity where your team can see who knows whom and leverage existing relationships for deal flow. Who it’s for: Investment professionals, business development teams, and anyone who relies on warm introductions to reach prospects. Where to access: Settings > LinkedIn Data > Upload Connections Feature status: Closed Beta (March 2026)

Why Import LinkedIn Connections?

The Problem: Hidden Networks

Your professional network extends far beyond your email contacts. LinkedIn connections represent thousands of relationships that don’t appear in Affinity because you haven’t emailed them recently—or ever. This creates blind spots: Before importing:
  • “Who at our firm knows the CEO of Company X?” → Toggle between Affinity and LinkedIn to check
  • “Do we have any paths to this prospect?” → Manually ask teammates if they’re connected
  • “Which portfolio CEOs can introduce us?” → Cross-reference LinkedIn separately After importing:
  • See your team’s collective LinkedIn network directly on company profiles
  • Blue LinkedIn badges show who at your firm is connected
  • Identify warm introduction paths without leaving Affinity

What You’ll Unlock

Warm Introduction Discovery: When viewing a target company in Affinity, immediately see which teammates are LinkedIn connected to people at that company. No more asking “does anyone know someone there?” on Slack—the answer is visible on the profile. Complete Network View: Your firm’s relationship intelligence now includes both interaction data (emails, meetings) AND LinkedIn connections. This gives you a comprehensive view of who your team knows, not just who they’ve recently contacted. Faster Sourcing: Evaluate whether your firm has existing paths to a prospect before spending time on cold outreach. LinkedIn connection visibility helps you prioritize opportunities where you already have warm introduction paths. Team Coordination: Stop duplicate outreach and leverage existing relationships. When multiple team members view the same target company, they all see who’s connected—enabling coordinated, relationship-driven deal flow.

How to Download Your LinkedIn Connections CSV

LinkedIn provides a data export feature that creates a CSV file of all your connections.

Step 1: Request Your Data from LinkedIn

  1. Go to LinkedIn.com and log in to your account.
  2. Click your profile photo (top right) > Settings & Privacy.
  3. Navigate to Data Privacy (left sidebar)
  4. Click Download my data.
  5. Select “Download larger data archives” (as this is what will get you the Connections data)
  6. Click Request archive.
  7. LinkedIn will email you when your data is ready (because you’re downloading the larger data archive, it can take anywhere between 24-48 hours and may involve LinkedIn sending your data in two parts).

Step 2: Download the CSV File

  1. Check your email for “Your LinkedIn data is ready”
  2. Click Download archive in the email
  3. Log in to LinkedIn if prompted
  4. Click Download on the data archive page
  5. A ZIP file downloads to your computer
  6. Unzip the file to extract the CSV File location: Look for Connections.csv inside the extracted folder

Step 3: Verify Your CSV is Ready

Before uploading to Affinity, confirm:File is CSV format (ends in .csv) ✅ File size is under 10MBFile contains connections data (open in Excel/Sheets to verify) Expected CSV columns from LinkedIn:
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Email Address (often blank for many connections)
  • Company (Current Organization)
  • Position (Current Job Title)
  • Connected On (Date) Note: Many LinkedIn connections don’t include email addresses in the export—this is normal and expected.

How to Import LinkedIn Connections into Affinity

Step 1: Navigate to LinkedIn Data Settings

  1. In Affinity, go to Settings (left navigation)
  2. Scroll to LinkedIn Data section
  3. Click Upload Connections

Step 2: Upload Your CSV File

  1. Drag and drop your Connections.csv file into the upload area
  • OR click Browse to select the file
  1. Wait for file validation (a few seconds)
  2. System confirms CSV has required columns File requirements:
  • Maximum size: 10MB
  • Format: CSV from LinkedIn export
  • Up to 25,000 connections supported If you see an error:
  • Verify file is under 10MB
  • Confirm it’s the Connections CSV from LinkedIn (not a different export)
  • Try re-downloading from LinkedIn if file appears corrupted

Step 3: Configure Import Details

Name your import:
  • Default: “LinkedIn Import - [Today’s Date]”
  • Edit to something memorable if uploading multiple times
  • Example: “LinkedIn Import - Q1 2026” or “Sarah Chen Connections”
  • Character limit: 100 characters Specify owner: Choose whose LinkedIn connections these represent:
Option 1: My LinkedIn Connections (default)
  • Select this if you’re uploading your own connections
  • Your LinkedIn network will be associated with your Affinity user profile Option 2: My Colleague’s LinkedIn Connections
  • Select this if you’re uploading on behalf of a teammate
  • Choose the teammate from the dropdown
  • Their LinkedIn network will be associated with their Affinity user profile Why this matters: The owner determines whose name appears on the blue LinkedIn badge when connections are displayed on company profiles.

Step 4: Review Import Preview

The preview shows:
  • New Profiles to Create: LinkedIn connections that don’t exist in Affinity yet
  • Profiles to Update: Existing Affinity people who will get LinkedIn connection badges
  • Total People to Import: Sum of new + updated How matching works: Affinity automatically matches your CSV to existing people using:
  1. LinkedIn URL (highest confidence) → Updates existing person
  2. Email address (high confidence) → Updates existing person
  3. Name only (low confidence) → Creates new person (safer than incorrect merge) Note: You cannot manually review individual matches—matching is fully automated. If uncertain matches create duplicates, you can merge them after import using Affinity’s duplicate merge tool.

Step 5: Acknowledge Privacy Terms

Before importing, you must check the privacy acknowledgment: “When you import your LinkedIn contacts, you’re transferring your personal network data to [Your Company]‘s Affinity account. Your employer will own and control this data…” Why this is required:
  • LinkedIn connections are your PERSONAL data
  • Uploading transfers ownership to your company
  • Your employer will have access to this network data
  • Must acknowledge before proceeding Checkbox must be checked to enable the “Confirm and Import” button.

Step 6: Confirm and Import

  1. Click Confirm and Import
  2. Green toast notification appears: “Your CSV is importing”
  3. You’re returned to LinkedIn Data settings page
  4. Import appears in Upload History table Import processing time:
  • Small (<1,000 connections): ~2-5 minutes
  • Medium (1,000-10,000): ~5-15 minutes
  • Large (10,000-25,000): ~15-30 minutes You’ll receive an email when import completes.

Where Your LinkedIn Connections Appear

On Company Profiles (Connections Tab)

After importing, company profiles show: Connection cards with LinkedIn badges:
  • Gray LinkedIn badge: Person has LinkedIn profile, no mutual connection at your firm
  • Blue LinkedIn badge: At least one person at your firm is LinkedIn connected LinkedIn Connections toggle filter:
  • Turn ON to show only people with LinkedIn connections from your firm
  • Useful for large companies with hundreds of connections Hover behavior:
  • Hover over any LinkedIn badge → “View profile” tooltip
  • Click badge → Opens person’s profile Visual example: When viewing “Acme Corp” company profile:
  • 15 people listed in Connections tab
  • 8 have blue LinkedIn badges (your firm is connected)
  • 7 have gray LinkedIn badges (on LinkedIn, but no firm connection)
  • Toggle ON “LinkedIn Connections” → Shows only the 8 with blue badges

On Person Profiles

LinkedIn badges appear on:
  • Person profile header
  • LinkedIn URL field populated (if available in CSV) For new people created from import:
  • Person appears in All People directory
  • Shows on associated company profiles
  • LinkedIn badge visible
  • Email field hidden until someone at firm emails them (see FAQ below)

In Upload History (Settings > LinkedIn Data)

Track all your imports: Upload History table shows:
  • Import Name: What you named it
  • Date Imported: When import completed
  • Rows in CSV: Total connections in your file
  • Total Rows Uploaded: How many successfully imported
  • New Records Created: New people added to Affinity
  • Records Enhanced: Existing people who got LinkedIn badges
  • People not Uploaded: Connections that were skipped (invalid data) Actions available:
  • Download CSV: Click to download your original file
  • Undo Import: Available for 3 days (see section below) Who sees upload history:
  • Person who uploaded the CSV
  • Person whose connections they are (owner)
  • Both users see the same import records

Understanding Import Results

What Happens to Your Connections

For connections that matched existing Affinity people: Updates applied:
  • LinkedIn connection association added (links you to that person)
  • Blue LinkedIn badge added to their connection cards
  • Additional emails from CSV added to “Other Emails” field
  • Person’s existing data remains unchanged What doesn’t change:
  • Relationship strength score stays the same
  • Notes, Lists, and other CRM data unaffected
  • Interaction history preserved For connections that didn’t match (new people created):
What gets created:
  • New person profile in All People directory
  • Populated with CSV data: Name, Company, Job Title, LinkedIn URL
  • Enriched with Affinity Data if LinkedIn URL available
  • Associated with company (if company exists in Affinity’s database)
  • LinkedIn connection badge added What doesn’t happen:
  • No relationship strength score (no interaction data yet)
  • Email field hidden until firm emails them (see below)
  • No Lists membership (not automatically added to Lists)
  • No Notes or interaction history

Why Email Addresses Are Hidden for New Connections

By design, new person records created solely from LinkedIn CSV (with no previous firm email interaction) have their email field hidden until someone at your firm actually emails that person. Why:
  • Prevents cold emailing contacts scraped from LinkedIn
  • Protects your firm from violating LinkedIn’s Terms of Service
  • LinkedIn connections are personal relationships, not marketing lists When email becomes visible:
  • After anyone at your firm sends an email to that person
  • Email field appears automatically once interaction recorded If you need to reach out:
  • Use LinkedIn for first contact (message or InMail)
  • Once they respond and you have their work email, email relationship begins
  • Email field then becomes visible in Affinity

Matching Summary Metrics

In Upload History, you’ll see: Total Rows Uploaded: Successfully imported connections (New + Enhanced) New Records Created: LinkedIn connections that didn’t match existing people (created new profiles) Records Enhanced: Existing Affinity people who got LinkedIn connection badges People not Uploaded: Connections that were skipped due to:
  • Invalid or malformed CSV data
  • Missing required fields (name)
  • Duplicate rows within same CSV If “People not Uploaded” is high:
  • Download original CSV from Upload History
  • Inspect skipped rows for data quality issues
  • Clean CSV and re-upload if needed

  • “Request a download of your account data”
    • “Download larger data archives”
  1. Under “Download larger data archives”, select Connections
  2. Do NOT select “All data” (this creates a much larger file with unnecessary information)
  3. Click Request archive

Step 3: Wait for LinkedIn to Prepare Your Data

  1. LinkedIn displays: “We’re preparing your data”
  2. You’ll receive an email when ready (subject: “Your LinkedIn data is ready”)
  3. Typical wait time: 5-10 minutes (occasionally up to 30 minutes)
  4. You can close the browser—LinkedIn will email you

Step 4: Download Your Archive

  1. Open the email from LinkedIn: “Your LinkedIn data is ready”
  2. Click Download your data button in email
  3. You may need to log in to LinkedIn again
  4. LinkedIn shows your available archives

Step 5: Extract the CSV File

  1. Locate the downloaded ZIP file (likely in Downloads)
  2. Unzip/Extract the archive:
  • Windows: Right-click > Extract All
    • Mac: Double-click the ZIP file
  1. Open the extracted folder
  2. Find Connections.csv file
  3. This is the file you’ll upload to Affinity

Preparing Your CSV for Upload

Verify CSV Contents

Open the CSV file (using Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers) to verify: ✅ Required columns present:
  • First Name
  • Last Name ✅ Helpful columns (if available):
  • Email Address
  • Company
  • Position
  • LinkedIn Profile URL ✅ Data looks reasonable:
  • Names are properly formatted
  • Company names make sense
  • No obvious corruption or encoding issues Don’t worry if:
  • Email Address column is mostly blank (this is normal)
  • Some connections have incomplete data
  • File has thousands of rows

Common CSV Issues and Fixes

Issue: File is too large (>10MB) Solution:
  • Split CSV into multiple files
  • Upload separately (Affinity will merge matches automatically)
  • Or remove columns you don’t need (keep only: First Name, Last Name, Email, Company, Position) Issue: CSV has encoding problems (weird characters)
Solution:
  1. Open CSV in Excel or Google Sheets
  2. Save As > CSV UTF-8 format
  3. Use newly saved file for upload Issue: Missing required columns
Solution:
  • Re-download from LinkedIn
  • Ensure you selected “Connections” (not a different data type)
  • Don’t edit or delete columns from LinkedIn’s export Issue: Duplicate connections in CSV
Solution:
  • Affinity handles duplicates automatically during matching
  • No need to manually de-dupe before uploading

Understanding What Gets Imported

Data Fields Imported from CSV

Affinity imports these fields from your LinkedIn Connections CSV:First Name → Person’s first name ✅ Last Name → Person’s last name ✅ Email Address → Added to person profile (if present in CSV) ✅ Company → Current Organization field ✅ Position → Current Job Title field ✅ LinkedIn Profile URL → LinkedIn URL field (enables Affinity Data enrichment) Not imported:
  • Connected On date (not used)
  • Any custom notes or tags from LinkedIn

What Happens During Import (Automatic Matching)

Affinity matches your CSV connections to existing people: Match by LinkedIn URL (highest confidence):
  • CSV LinkedIn URL matches existing person’s LinkedIn URL
  • Action: Updates existing person, adds LinkedIn connection badge
  • No duplicate created Match by Email (high confidence):
  • CSV email matches existing person’s email
  • Action: Updates existing person, adds LinkedIn connection badge, adds additional emails to “Other Emails”
  • No duplicate created Name-only match (low confidence):
  • CSV has name but no email or LinkedIn URL
  • Action: Creates NEW person record (safer than incorrect merge)
  • May create duplicates if person already exists Example:
  • CSV has: John Smith, john@example.com, linkedin.com/in/johnsmith
  • Affinity has existing person: John Smith with same email
  • Result: Email match → Updates existing person, adds LinkedIn badge (no duplicate) Example:
  • CSV has: Sarah Chen, (no email), (no LinkedIn URL)
  • Affinity has existing person: Sarah Chen
  • Result: Name-only match (low confidence) → Creates NEW person (you can merge manually later)

Post-Import Enrichment

After import, Affinity automatically enriches new people: If LinkedIn URL present in CSV:
  • Enriches person with Affinity Data (job title, company, location, etc.)
  • Associates person with company (if company in Affinity’s database)
  • Person appears on company’s Connections tab If no LinkedIn URL:
  • Creates basic profile with CSV data only
  • No automatic Affinity Data enrichment
  • You can add LinkedIn URL manually later to trigger enrichment

Managing Your Imports

Viewing Upload History

Location: Settings > LinkedIn Data > Upload History What you’ll see: Table with all your imports (and imports you own if someone uploaded on your behalf):
  • Import Name
  • Date Imported
  • Rows in CSV (total in file)
  • Total Rows Uploaded (successfully imported)
  • New Records Created
  • Records Enhanced (existing people updated)
  • People not Uploaded (skipped rows) Actions available:
  • Download CSV: Get copy of original file you uploaded
  • Undo Import: Remove import (available for 3 days only)

Undoing an Import

Within 3 days of import:
  1. Go to Settings > LinkedIn Data > Upload History
  2. Find the import you want to undo
  3. Click Undo Import
  4. Review what will be undone
  5. Click Confirm What gets removed:
  • ✅ New person profiles created from import are deleted (including all their data)
  • ✅ Updates to existing profiles are reverted (LinkedIn badges removed, additional emails removed)
  • ⚠️ Enriched companies remain in All Organizations directory (won’t be deleted)
  • ⚠️ Company-person associations may remain After 3 days:
  • Undo button no longer available
  • Contact Affinity Support at support@affinity.co to request undo
  • Provide: Import name, date, and reason for undo

Re-Uploading Updated Connections

LinkedIn connections aren’t automatically synced. To keep Affinity updated:
  1. Periodically download fresh Connections CSV from LinkedIn
  2. Upload to Affinity using same process
  3. Affinity’s matching prevents duplicates:
  • Existing matches → Updates with any new data
    • New connections → Creates new people
    • No duplicates for same connections Recommended frequency:
  • Quarterly for most teams
  • Monthly if your network grows rapidly
  • After major conferences or networking events

Best Practices

Before Uploading

Clean your LinkedIn network first:
  • Review connections and remove spam or irrelevant contacts
  • Update job titles and companies on LinkedIn (data flows to CSV)
  • Add LinkedIn URLs where missing (improves matching) Coordinate with your team:
  • Encourage all team members to upload connections
  • Schedule uploads around same time (quarterly network refresh)
  • Collectively decide on naming convention for imports Understand the trade-offs:
  • Your personal LinkedIn network becomes visible to your employer
  • Company owns this data after upload
  • Consider privacy implications before uploading

During Upload

Name imports clearly:
  • Use dates: “LinkedIn Import - Q1 2026”
  • Or specify owner: “Sarah Chen Connections - March 2026”
  • Helps differentiate when viewing Upload History Review preview carefully:
  • Check New Profiles count seems reasonable
  • Verify Total People matches expectations
  • If numbers look off, cancel and investigate CSV On behalf of colleagues:
  • Get their permission before uploading their connections
  • Select correct owner from dropdown
  • They’ll see the import in their Upload History

After Upload

Review results in Upload History:
  • Check “People not Uploaded” count
  • If high (>10% of total), investigate:
  • Download original CSV
    • Review skipped rows for data issues
    • Consider cleaning and re-uploading Merge any duplicates:
  • Name-only matches may create duplicates
  • Use Affinity’s duplicate merge tool to consolidate
  • Merging preserves all data from both records Test LinkedIn badge visibility:
  • Search for a company you know you’re connected to
  • Verify blue LinkedIn badges appear on connection cards
  • Toggle LinkedIn Connections filter to confirm it works Communicate to team:
  • Let teammates know you’ve uploaded connections
  • Encourage them to do the same for comprehensive network visibility
  • Share how to use LinkedIn badges to identify warm paths

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I upload my LinkedIn connections? Quarterly is typical for most teams. Upload more frequently (monthly) if your network grows rapidly or after major networking events. LinkedIn connections don’t automatically sync—you must manually re-download and re-upload for updates. Can I upload connections for my entire team at once? No. Each person’s connections must be uploaded separately (one CSV per person). However, anyone can upload on behalf of a colleague by selecting “My Colleague’s LinkedIn Connections” and choosing the owner during import. Will this create duplicate people in Affinity? Possibly. If your LinkedIn CSV has connections with only names (no email or LinkedIn URL), the system creates new records rather than risk incorrect merges. You can manually merge duplicates after import using Affinity’s duplicate merge tool. What if my CSV is larger than 10MB? Split the CSV into multiple files and upload separately. Affinity’s matching logic prevents duplicates across uploads—the same connection uploaded twice won’t create duplicates. Why don’t new LinkedIn connections have email addresses? By design. Email fields are hidden for new people created from LinkedIn-only data (no prior firm email interaction) to prevent LinkedIn ToS violations. Once someone at your firm emails that person, the email field becomes visible. Do LinkedIn connections get relationship strength scores? No. New people created from LinkedIn import don’t receive relationship scores because scores are based on interaction data (emails, meetings). Just knowing someone on LinkedIn doesn’t indicate relationship strength. Existing people who get LinkedIn badges keep their existing scores. Can teammates see my LinkedIn connections after I upload? Yes. After you upload, LinkedIn connection badges become visible to everyone at your firm on company/person profiles. Upload history is only visible to you and the connection owner, but the resulting network data is firm-wide. What’s the difference between gray and blue LinkedIn badges?
  • Gray badge: Person has a LinkedIn profile but no one at your firm is LinkedIn connected to them
  • Blue badge: At least one person at your firm is LinkedIn connected to this person Can I see WHO at my firm is connected to a specific person? Not in the current closed beta. You can see that someone at your firm is connected (blue badge) but not who specifically. This functionality is planned for General Availability (GA) release.
How long does the import take? Depends on file size:
  • Small (<1,000): ~2-5 minutes
  • Medium (1,000-10,000): ~5-15 minutes
  • Large (10,000-25,000): ~15-30 minutes You’ll receive an email when complete.
Can I undo an import? Yes, within 3 days. Go to Settings > LinkedIn Data > Upload History, find the import, click Undo Import. After 3 days, contact Support. What happens when I re-upload connections? Affinity updates existing matched records and creates new ones for new connections. Re-uploading the same connections won’t create duplicates—matching prevents this.

Troubleshooting

Upload Failed or Stuck

Symptoms: Error message during upload, or import stuck in “Processing” for >2 hours Try:
  1. Verify file is <10MB and CSV format
  2. Confirm it’s LinkedIn Connections export (not Messages or other data)
  3. Re-download fresh CSV from LinkedIn
  4. Try uploading again
  5. If persists, contact Support with import name and error details

Fewer Connections Imported Than Expected

Symptoms: “People not Uploaded” count is high relative to total CSV rows Common causes:
  • Invalid CSV data (malformed rows)
  • Missing required fields (name)
  • Duplicate rows in same CSV Resolution:
  1. Download original CSV from Upload History
  2. Open in Excel/Sheets and review skipped rows
  3. Look for:
  • Blank name fields
    • Strange characters or encoding issues
    • Duplicate entries
  1. Clean CSV and re-upload if needed

Created Unwanted Duplicates

Symptoms: Same person appears multiple times in All People directory Why this happens:
  • CSV had name-only data (no email or LinkedIn URL)
  • Low-confidence match → System created new record (safer than incorrect merge) Fix:
  1. Use Affinity’s duplicate merge tool to consolidate
  2. OR undo import (if within 3 days) and clean CSV before re-uploading

LinkedIn Badges Not Appearing

Symptoms: Uploaded connections but don’t see blue badges on company profiles Check:
  1. Verify import completed (check email confirmation)
  2. Review Upload History - confirm “New Records” or “Records Enhanced” > 0
  3. Refresh the company profile page
  4. Check specific person profiles for LinkedIn badges
  5. If still not visible after 30 minutes, contact Support

Privacy and Data Ownership Considerations

What You’re Sharing

When you upload LinkedIn connections: You’re transferring your PERSONAL LinkedIn network data to your employer’s Affinity account:
  • Names of all your LinkedIn connections
  • Their job titles and companies
  • Their email addresses (if available)
  • Their LinkedIn profile URLs Your employer gains:
  • Visibility into who you know professionally
  • Ability to leverage your network for business purposes
  • Ownership and control of this data Consider:
  • This makes your personal network a business asset
  • You cannot retroactively make connections “private” after uploading
  • Undo within 3 days if you change your mind

Data Ownership

After upload:
  • Your employer owns the LinkedIn connection data
  • Data persists even if you leave the company
  • Firm can use your network data for deal flow, introductions, sourcing Before uploading, consider:
  • Are you comfortable sharing your full LinkedIn network with your employer?
  • Do you have connections you’d prefer to keep private?
  • Is there a firm policy on LinkedIn data uploads? If you have concerns:
  • Discuss with your manager before uploading
  • Review company policies on personal data
  • Consider which connections are appropriate to share
